Northwestern University just announced that Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho (b. 1952) has won this year's Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Music Composition, which carries an award of $100,000, and a performance of one of her works by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2009-2010.
For listeners inclined toward contemporary choral music, here's a fine sample: Der Frühling, one of the four parts of Tag des Jahrs (Day of the Years), written in 2001 for mixed choir and electronics, performed by The Crossing.
