That's the former identify of what is now the Brooklyn Lyceum, and home to this year's MATA Festival, now in full swing through Friday. Last night's packed house heard the Boston Modern Orchestra Project conducted by Gil Rose, in New York premieres by Alejandro Rutty, Derek Hurst, Ken Ueno and Lisa Bielawa. Special guests included the Firebird Ensemble in Hurst's Clades, violinists Colin Jacobsen and Carla Kihlstedt in Bielawa's Double Violin Concerto, and Ueno doing a turn as solo throat singer in his On a Sufficient Condition for the Existence of Most Specific Hypothesis.
At first hearing Mr. Rutty's The Conscious Sleepwalker Loops made a strong impression, sounding like a strange amalgam of film scores, jazz, ragas and other effects, and Bielawa's concerto showed a mournful romanticism. If you go come early, both to hear the pre-concert music and to get a good seat.
Last night's opener was Leif Inge's 9 Beet Stretch, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony elongated to last 24 hours, with the original pitches intact. (Pete Matthews probably won't forget it for awhile.)
