Tonight I begin four consecutive nights of Wagner's Ring, staged by the Mariinsky Theatre with Valery Gergiev and a galaxy of Russian singers, but what I'm most curious about is the production by designer George Tsypin. I first encountered Tsypin in Prokoviev's Semyon Kotko (a dazzling piece also mounted by the Kirov) followed by two more Prokofiev operas at the Met: The Gambler (his Met debut) and War & Peace. Reviews to come.
