For a brief period last Sunday, a new recording of Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine (1610) was outselling Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster (Deluxe Edition) on iTunes's all-genre chart. The perpetrators of such success are a Miami-based choir called Seraphic Fire, founded in 2002, and founder, conductor and artistic director, Patrick Dupré Quigley. Interestingly, the recording uses a reduced ensemble, rather than the larger forces more commonly deployed. I hope they sent a copy to their chart competitor.
