I'll have a second helping
Over the weekend, the American Modern Ensemble presented what may have been the funniest concert of the season titled Food and Music, with unusual works by Barbara Kolb, Marc Mellits, Yotam Haber and others. AME founder Rob Paterson offered his new Eating Variations, with hilarious texts by New York poet Ron Singer, and the concert ended with Aaron Jay Kernis's Quattro Stagione dalla Cucina Futurismo (The Four Seasons of Futurist Cuisine) based on Filippo Tommaso Marinetti's The Futurist Cookbook, first published in 1932. Marinetti's surreal recipes have novel combinations of ingredients, and equally eye-opening methods of preparation, such as chunks of raw meat torn apart by trumpet blasts.

Bruce, it's funny that you mentioned The Gallery of Regrettable Food, as that's one of my favorite coffee table books. I think Bolcom's Lime Jello... piece is even in there, or some sort of variation. My other favorites are the porcupine meatballs and the birthday tomato soup, complete with candles. Truly hideous stuff, that's for sure.

Dear Bruce, Good to meet you at the AME concert! I'm listening to Mari Kimura's album now - great stuff! I'll let you know when my friend, Olivia, puts on her her vln & electronics rectial - which I will hopefully write a piece for! Best regards, Brian

Thanks, Brian, and glad you like that Kimura recording. As far as electro-acoustic projects go, hers is one of the more interesting I've heard in a long time. The variety of techniques is pretty impressive; the pieces don't all sound alike.
