I'm so happy the strangely alluring Spiegeltent (now parked at the South Street Seaport) will once again be occupied by the International Contemporary Ensemble, which appeared there last August in an electrifying reading of Louis Andriessen's Workers Union. This time their focus is on Philippe Manoury, the French composer now teaching at the University of California, San Diego. On September 4, ICE will do the world premiere of Cruel Spirals (2007) with the soprano Tony Arnold, whose Nono performance in May is still churning around in my head. Also on the program are Last (1997) for bass clarinet and marimba and En Echo (1993) for soprano and electronics, with the composer on hand to help with the latter.
